COURSE DESCRIPTION
Web technologies surround us. How will you become a creator, and not just a user of these applications? Students will learn history of the web and about relevant art and design on the web. Using design principles, students will design and build websites using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and by learning how to manipulate WordPress.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Students will work on a series of exercises and projects to gain an understanding of the principles associated with web technologies. Upon completing the class students should feel comfortable with the following:
1. Analyzing potential projects and creating user centered solutions with clear goals and outcomes.
2. Identifying and utilizing effective structures and resources for creating interactive web-based projects.
3. Creating compelling interaction and interfaces that respond to the needs of the established users
4. Creating and understanding responsive designs.
5. Developing and/or honing critical ideas.

SCHEDULE
Week 1: Web Art and WordPress

Exercise 1: Create a WordPress site and customize the theme using the UI (not CSS)

Week 2: The history of the Internet, HTML
Exercise 2: Make three different HTML only webpage layouts

Project 1: Design your website on paper and in illustrator (or vector program), including any assets. It must consist of at least 5 pages. Who is your audience? What is your message?

Week 3: HTML

Week 4: Work on Project 1, critique

Project 2: Build your website. Using HTML and CSS, build your website without Dreamweaver or another WYSIWYG.

Week 6: CSS, web platforms: devices/browsers/OS

Exercise 3: Using an existing WordPress theme, modify it to be your own. It should be uniquely yours.

Week 7: in progress critique for project 2, Artists/wearables examples, cyborg theory

Week 8: Break

Week 9: Responsive design, workflow, Work on project 2

Week 10: Work on Project 2, critique

Final Project: Complete your website with JavaScript and other scripting. Do you need to use any XML, APIs? What social media links need to be included?

Week 11: JavaScript and libraries

Exercise 4: Make a JavaScript game.

Week 12: APIs and XML scraping

Week 13: in progress critique for final project

Exercise 4: Scrape data into a webpage. Why did you choose that data and how did you present it?

Week 14: Work on Final; group troubleshooting and user testing

Week 15: Final Project and critique.
